A while back I posted a picture of a Zamia furfuracea cone. I wasn't too sure if it was male or female having not seen this species cone for a while. As soon as I saw the plant below I knew the previous cone was female.

Male Zamia cones are much, much longer and thinner than the females and look kind of weird - especially when like this one they emerge like an obscene triffid from the foliage next to a hotel lobby.

One thing I didn't mention previously was that Zamia - like all cycads are rather toxic so be careful, I don't want any of my readers going down with the Zamia staggers.
