The Heronery

Herons are awesome birds for beginning birdwatchers or bird photographers - why? Well they're big, interesting, fairly easy to see and identify for the most part and they conveniently stand still whilst you note ID characteristics or get your photos.

You didn't mention the word widespread! Like your tropic island, Arizona has its share of herons. If a water catchment is an acre or more in size, it probably has its resident blue heron. Our rivers (the ones with water), have night herons and you'll periodically spot an egret or two at water spots, too.
