Blue, unspikey, dinosalad

Longtime readers may remember one of my first cycad posts featuring the blue barbed-wire cycad, Encephalartos horridus. Here's a closely related blue Enceph, Encephalartos trispinosus.

encephalartos trispinosus

It shares horridus' wonderful colour but lacks (or at least is not quite as exuberant in) its wacky shape and horrific spikes. Some would say this makes it slightly less characterful but I prefer to think of it as being slightly more gardener friendly. It forms a number of low growing heads but will also throw up trunks from time to time amidst the clumps. Both species will always appeal to collectors. This is a male - see the male cone in the bottom right rosette head.
