The California Tree

This is a biggish giant sequoia from the Grant Grove, the California Tree (many of the Grant Grove trees are named for states). To try to do it justice I've autostitched a number of photos together so you'll need to scroll down to learn more.

According to the most recent measurements I have found its 255 feet high with a 22 foot trunk diameter at chest height. What makes this one interesting is that in August 1967 it was struck by lightning and its top caught fire. Rather than let it smoulder internally for months in such a visited area, a park ranger was dispatched up the tree using climbing gear to put a hose inside it and put it out!
