Blue Steel

Edited 5/1/09 to correct identification.

"Who cares about Derek Zoolander anyway? The man has only one look for Christ's
sake! Blue Steel? Ferrari? Le Tigre? They're the same face! Doesn't anybody
notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
"
Zoolander, 2001

Unlike Derek Zoolander, palms have a vast array of looks. Brahea armata Bismarckia nobilis however is undoubtedly the blue steel of the family.

This is actually a pretty hardy palm for temperate conditions but this is one of many around the Stamford Pavillion and Sticky Wicket complex at VC Bird International Airport, Antigua.

Every time I see its huge blue leaves this plant amazes me, its just such a striking looking plant.

Edit: I originally thought this was Brahea armata, a very similar looking and cold-hardier plant.

This is a beautiful palm. I love the powdery grey colour. I have highlighted its name in my botanical wishlist. Perhaps it is available in Australia. I also like the big moth, ( I am a moths "fan"!)

Leaves are similar in shape to our desert palms, but what a gorgeous colour!
