Beating the Drum

Spotted drum are, I think you'll agree, rather special looking. They tend to circle back and forth in the same spot which should make them easy to photograph but their weird shape, colouration and swimming style makes it very hard to trap one in focus.

This photo taken at night was as close as I came to beating the drum. Typically the dorsal fin is more sickle shaped but this juvenile had his flared out.
