Encephalartos Cones

The Encephalartos cycads of Southern Africa don't produce cones very often but when they do, its rather impressive.

Encephalartos cones

Since plants are either male or female and some sexes of some species are very rare (or in the case of E. woodii forever single), these are some of the few plants for which artificial insemination using frozen male pollen is used. I can't remember which species this is, and as you can see, chopped off the label but I'll take a punt at it being E. villosus.
