Most beautiful birds meme

Pam and Home Bird tagged me with John at DC Birding Blog's most beautiful birds meme.

"The rules are: Post a list of the 10 birds you consider most beautiful on your blog; you may limit the list to the ABA area (continental United States and Canada) or use a geographic area of your choice. Mark birds you have seen with an asterisk. Tag 3 bloggers to keep it going"

Here goes. I'm going with the palearctic region btw cos a) its where I've spent most time; and b) its huge - lots to play with!

1. Avocet (Eurasion/pied)*
2. Great Snipe
3. Black-browed albatross*
4. Red-legged falcon
5. Goldcrest*
6. Snowy Owl
7. Mandarin Duck*
8. Red-crowned Crane
9. Coal tit*
10. House Martin*

couldn't fit yellow-throated warbler as its a new world bird (and apparently never a vagrant) so that can go in as the most beautiful bird I have seen and one of the peacock-pheasants can go in as the most beautifulbird I haven't seen. I wrote this last night and then came back to it today and realised I'd left out one of my absolute favourites; the House Martin and also the Mandarin Duck so Dartford Warbler and Eurasian Jay both get bumped to honourable mentions alongside Little Owl. Here's a repeat of a photo of number 7 I put up a while back (cos I always try to give you at least one photo):

Everyone I can think of has already been tagged so alas I'll have to break that rule but I've really enjoyed learning about everyone's favourites.

this has been a really fun meme! I love seeing everyone's choices and how they deal with the issue of having to leave out some of their favorite birds.
You have a wonderful list -- I hope someday to be able to see all the birds on your list.
I am glad you participated

I've had particular fun learning about birds in other parts of the world. Even though I lived in England for quite a bit of my childhood, my recollections of birds are very different from yours. I'm thoroughly enjoying your list - looking up birds I'm not familiar with. Thanks so much for participating.

Glad you enjoyed it I did too (and learnt a fair bit).

Lovely list, Tai--and what a wonderful photo of the mandarin duck. I can see why you couldn't leave it off.
