This is a stellar spring flowering shrub, Magnolia stellata.
Most Magnolias get pretty big, too big for some urban gardens but this little star remains fairly small. Around about now ours is covered in these white flowers.
Unlike the larger magnolias with their strong fleshy flowers these are slightly more delicate and I love the way one or two petals are always slighlt out of place. It gives the bloom a sort of careless beauty that for some reason reminds me of how I always think girls' long hair looks better after they get caught out in the rain than when they spend hours having it styled - does that make sense to anyone?

Fresh and free -- beautiful
Thank you. I was pleased to time my photo for when the flowers were at their best.
